Thomas McGowan: Officially Exonerated

Published by Natalie Roetzel at 4:06 pm under Exonerees, dna

Yesterday, Thomas McGowan became the 15th man officially exonerated by DNA testing in Dallas County when the Court of Criminal Appeals granted his writ of habeas corpus. McGowan, who was released from incarceration in April of this year, served 23 years in prison for a sexual assault that he did not commit. He joins the ranks of 31 others who have been exonerated by DNA evidence in the State of Texas. An additional three Dallas County men have had their convictions called into question by DNA testing, but they still await further legal proceedings before their exonerations become official.

Texas is currently home to more DNA based exonerations than any other state in the Nation. Dallas County leads the way in the number of DNA exonerations verified in a single county.
