In 1983, a Dallas County woman was violently attacked and raped by three men in her home. James Curtis Giles was arrested and convicted of the offense. He served ten years before being released on parole, and it wasn’t until 2007 that lawyers with the Innocence Project secured his exoneration based on DNA testing that conclusively proved Giles was innocent.
In recent years, DNA testing has identified the victim’s true attackers. One of the assailants was named James Earl Giles. James Earl Giles had no relation to James Curtis Giles – the man convicted of the assault. In fact, it is now known that not only did James Earl Giles commit the offense, but he also lived across the street from where the attack took place.
