Harris County Commissioners Consider Public Defender System

Published by Natalie Roetzel at 5:37 pm under Criminal Justice, Public Policy

This week, the Harris County Commissioners voted unanimously to research whether the County is in need of a public defender’s office. The creation of such a department would be a positive step toward ensuring that indigent defendants receive adequate representation when charged with crimes in Harris County. The Houston Chronicle acknowledged that this vote could be the start of a revolution, a step away from the traditional court appointment system and toward effective assistance of counsel, even for those who can’t afford to hire an attorney. For more information about the commissioner’s vote and plan, please see the full Houston Chronicle article by clicking here.
