Harris County Commissioners Consider Public Defender System
This week, the Harris County Commissioners voted unanimously to research whether the County is in need of a public defender’s office. The creation of such a department would be a positive step toward ensuring that indigent defendants receive adequate representation when charged with crimes in Harris County. The Houston Chronicle acknowledged that this vote could be the start of a revolution, a step away from the traditional court appointment system and toward effective assistance of counsel, even for those who can’t afford to hire an attorney.
