The Innocence Project of Texas received word yesterday that the JEHT Foundation has approved a $453,900 grant which will help cover several expenses associated with running our Dallas DNA Audit project in cooperation with the Dallas District Attorney’s Office. The money will be used to fund two full-time I.P.O.T. staff positions (a Policy Director and Case Coordinator), and $250,000 will be designated for DNA testing. Currently, there are 15 cases in queue for testing that will directly benefit from the generous contribution of the JEHT Foundation.

We are ecstatic about this development and are looking forward to working with the D.A.’s Office in our evaluation of the more than 400 claims of innocence made by inmates who previously had their requests for DNA testing denied in Dallas County. A special thanks goes out to the JEHT Foundation and to the Dallas County Commissioners for their continued support of the District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit. The Commissioners recently approved funding for the unit for two years as the DNA Audit progresses.

For more information, please see a recent AP article about this development.
