Junk Science: A Texas Injustice
The use of junk science in the courtroom is truly a Texas-sized injustice. With convictions resulting from the use of dog scent lineups, flawed arson science, and other forms of faulty scientific evidence, our organization has organized a campaign to exonerate those who have suffered wrongful convictions at the hands of these practices. Statewide DNA Case Review
With more than 40 exonerations and counting, the State of Texas leads the nation in the number of wrongful convictions exposed by the use of modern DNA testing technologies. That is why the Innocence Project of Texas has implemented a Statewide DNA Case Review program that will allow our organization to evaluate and investigate hundreds of requests for assistance made by individuals whose innocence can be proven by the testing of biological evidence.
The Statewide DNA Case Review is made possible by a generous grant from the Texas Bar Foundation. The Foundation, which previously funded I.P.O.T.’s review of DNA cases in Dallas County, has created the opportunity for our organization to more effectively and efficiently evaluate cases from other areas of the state. With funding available for investigations and DNA testing, we are optimistic that several more wrongful convictions will be reversed.
As part of the review process, we are interested in hearing more about cases where DNA could conclusively prove a defendant’s innocence. If someone you know meets the criteria below, please have them contact our organization immediately.
- The individual was convicted of a felony offense in Texas;
- The individual is claiming to be innocent of the crime (e.g. they were not involved in the crime in any way);
- The individual would like our assistance and has already exhausted their direct appeals;
- During the investigation of the case, biological evidence was collected from the crime scene or victim; and
- A test of that evidence could conclusively prove the individual’s innocence.
All requests for assistance made under this program should be mailed to:
